Plot summary:

After her mother's death, Annie Lewis is unable to mourn—their relationship was never a loving one. But at a charity ball, she meets Thomas Kresley, a mysterious stranger who knew her in a way she never did. But what does this man want from her, whose presence makes her feel inexplicably terrified?
